Flower Sprout looks like a tiny cabbage with green frilly leaves, streaked with purple. This variety has a fantastic, complex taste of a sprout with the mild, sweet nutty taste of kale. It is winter hardy and full of Vitamin E.
Sow the seeds, from March to April, thinly in trays or two seeds per cell in modules under glass at 13C. Later sowings can be made into a seed bed in shallow drills 2cm deep in short rows. As soon as glasshouse seedlings show their first pair of leaves, prick off into trays 5cm apart or thin modules to one seedling per cell. Gradually harden off before planting out when the plant reaches about 15cm tall. Plant in beds 60cm between plants and 90cm between the rows. Outdoor sowings should be thinned to 7-10cm apart. Once plants are large enough, they should be lifted and transplanted to their final planting positions, spaced the same as detailed above.
