Aucuba japonica Crotonifolia is a tough, evergreen Japanese laurel valued for its glossy, boldly variegated leaves that light up deep and partial shade. It is dependable in moist, well-drained, moderately fertile soils and notably copes with dry shade once established. Small purple flowers in spring may be followed by red berries on this female form if a suitable male Aucuba is nearby. Excellent for shady borders and as reliable evergreen structure or screening.
