A compact, slow-growing evergreen with glossy deep-green leaves, Aucuba japonica Rozannie thrives in partial to full shade and makes an excellent structural shrub for difficult, shaded spots or containers. Small purple spring flowers are followed (on established plants) by bright red berries without the need for a male pollinator, adding seasonal interest into autumn and winter. Grow in moist but well-drained, fertile soil; ideal as a low-maintenance backdrop or for adding bold foliage in shade.
