Cornus sanguinea Midwinter Fire is a deciduous dogwood prized for its brilliant winter stems that glow yellow, orange and red, giving superb seasonal structure and colour. Small creamy-white flowers appear in late spring to early summer, followed by green summer foliage that takes on warm autumn tints. Grow in full sun or partial shade (best stem colour in sun) in moist but welldrained, moderately fertile soil; it will tolerate heavier clay. For the brightest winter display, cut back hard in early spring to encourage fresh, colourful young shoots; striking when planted in groups or near water for reflected winter colour.
