Onion – Ailsa Craig

This type produce large globe shaped bulbs with pale straw coloured skin giving reasonable yields. They are popular for plant sales and for exhibition.

Make early sowings from January to April in modules undercover at 14C, only lightly covering with compost. Seedlings should be pricked off into trays when about 15cm tall. Plant out 15cm apart in early April after hardening off. Sow later direct in situ 1cm deep in rows 1cm apart. Outdoor sowings should be thinned in two stages to 15cm spacing.
