The Carline thistle is a short and very spiny plant with brownish yellow flower heads surrounded by straw bracts. It flowers in mid-summer and the dried flowers can be found into the autumn.

Sow at any time but in the wild, it needs cold temperatures to germinate so best time is autumn and early spring.
